4k TV worth it?

Postby H311fi5h » 05 Apr 2016 17:08

Wanna buy a TV, primarily for watching Netflix

Was thinking about this:
http://www.amazon.de/Samsung-UE50J5550- ... B00U57PV1G

or this
http://www.amazon.de/Samsung-UE48JU6050 ... B0117IJRE8

Is it worth spending 100 more for 4k resolution?

I'm pretty sure 4K is a waste on 45-50 inches, and it wont be noticeable for the average person before you compare 1080p and 4K on a +70 inches screen.
Though, in my argument, price is usually the basis why its a waste and 100€ is a decent price for the quality bump.

Do mind that there's little content in 4K.
Mostly porn.

On a small TV like that, you won't notice the difference. For example i sit 2m from a 100" screen and 1080p is still very good.

I have a BenQ W1070 and its very good quality image for the price, only downside is the potential rainbow effect and some noise.

Also bulbs are pretty cheap (no counterfeit) if you buy them directly from China :D.

Not sure how's Netflix truly with their quality, but what I know from our business is that 4k is most of the time just converted from 1080p. But you can still watch all those movies, YouTube stuff etc so it's not such a waste if you're not going to watch from just one source (and again,I don't know how is Netflix handling their files, but I would take I guess that it's not true 4k).

I had the same issue a couple of years ago i bought an used beamer, no regrets so far.
There are a couple of well known disatvantages
- if sunlight shines into the room the picture is not taht epic if its dark
- lifetime of the blub is limited for me that is no issue because i am not watching tv i only watch movies and sport events.
- your friends show up evertime if there is an sportevent/special shit on tv/new movie on kinoxto/weekend....

But u save a lot of money compared to an tv...
many people are thinking that the blub is very expensive, but this must not be the case e.g. i bougth my beamer for ~200€ and a new blub is ~50€.
I have an Acer H5350 hdmi pin hd-ready if u ask me more is fancy shit if u are not watching many blueray and stuff like this.

depends on which 1080p you use as a comparison.
For example: I have a really basic one from LG, 1080p, no after "processing" or however you might call it. 50 inches. My father has a 60 inch 1080p TV, also from LG, but with some fancy motion-optimization, so his 1080p looks so much better compared to mine.
Bottom line: 1080p should be enough for the next few years, but if you buy a TV hoping to use it for a longer period of time it might be worth it. Otherwise: Get a used TV, safe a lot of money and reevaluate in 2-3 years.

you are as bad in tech as in tonks. all that matter is the tv panel ( 90% 100hz tuned virtually to infinty to attract stupid ppl ).

1080p/i is totally fine given the content and how slow germany is to implement new standards. so if the tv fe is above your head and you want to cover a wide angle colorquality wise go for an ips panel, if not take whatever you want.

ask yourself if you need 3d or if you like curved displays ( gud for playing ) and mix that with a healthy screensize ( <50 inch ).

the rest is just to hit the right setting for the task you use it ( most plebs fail there [hi mekokke] ).

By the time 4k is standard they'll probably have figured out some new type of port that directly gives you a tv feed from the internet or something, meaning you'd want to buy a new one again..

I'd stick with 1080p for now, maybe a bit smaller if you want some better pixel density, personally wouldn't go over about 40 inch at <4m.

Some things to take into consideration:
1. If you want want to watch 4K stream you'll need steady Internet connection speed of 25 megabits per second or higher.
Actually they even have some recommendations on their site: https://help.netflix.com/en/node/13444
2. There isn't a lot of 4K content out there
3. Check the reviews of the "smart" part of a brand before buying. From what I heard/was told by others Samsung is the best at this
4. The screen should be related to the viewing distance
5. Because of the human eye, unless you're sitting really close to almost see the different pixels of the screen .. 4K wouldn't make a big difference

I have a 4K curved display bought recently < 2 months (mostly because I needed a bigger TV + I liked the features that my old one did not have + there was a 50+% discount from Samsung for the 40" S9 model :) )
- The curved display is great as it gives you more depth to the scenes. Check 2 TVs side by side if you can to see the difference (most obvious on sport broadcasts like a football match)
- 99% of the time I get to watch stuff that are not even HD ... so ... 100 more for 4K? only if you want to have that TV for the next 5+ years as I do IMHO
- the quality in HD is way better than my full HD LG that I bought 5 years ago. As Brati said... it's all about the panel and how it's lit not the max resolution
- as Winter said don't buy a huge TV if you're sitting close to it. I don't know how are the TV casts in Germany but at least in Romania there are a lot of TV stations that are not broadcasting even in HD ready. On my 40" sitting < 3 m away I can actually see the "square pixels" on these kind of broadcasts. There are calculators on the net for the optimal viewing distance as a reference.
- DON'T use WI-FI! The wifi on the TVs are usually far from great... I had a lot of issues finding the Wireless board specs for TVs. Most of those were not listed anywhere.
- The colors when connecting the PC are great now. On the old TV whatever was red was almost unreadable (like the WOT enemy icons) on the new one I don't see that issue (granted I only hooked up my Raspberry Pi to it and not the PC ... yet)

completely unnecessary comment, as always brati. First of all, depending on the stuff he is watching, screens up to 200Hz could make sense. Furthermore all I wanted to express is that even with the same resolution there can be massive differences in quality and picture between TVs. You should always check a TV "live" before buying it, because stores tend to display cheaper/not as good 1080p TVs next to their more expensive 4k stuff, so they seem even better in comparison, have special videos to make the picture even "better looking". So you should ask them to display normal TV-program on the TVs you are interested in.
And my last line was, that he should get a used 1080p to reevalute in a few years, since the 4k-support could be way better by then. But I guess you already zone out when there are more than 20 words of text.

Remmke just said he has a 100 inch screen. :Oo: I'd get a sore neck from having to look over all sides of the screen alone. :deadseal:

Depends on how far the sitting positions are.
3 - 4,7m is the THX recommendations on a 100 inch screen.

I have a 55 inch LG 55UF850V and to be honest, I think it was a silly idea to purchase 4k. Get a decent 1080p with better refresh, or better screen technology, because 99.9% of the content is HD.

Also, I have my eye on a 75-inch display at the moment for our living room - our room is large. I think up to 50 inches is fine for medium sized rooms.

Best of luck with your purchase and let us know what you buy.

1. Why do people buy always those big TVs, Most peoples room is rather small so a 40/42" does it perfectly. 4K is overrated. PAL tv still best one Kappa
2.Get urself a good 1080 and never regret
