[HELP] Notebook advices

Postby Gotma » 26 Jul 2016 16:51

After 6 years my notebook screen broke today while I tried to get rid of a pesky insect, karma is a bitch I know.

But that is not the point, I was thinking about getting a new one anyway. I know that notebooks are generally not made for gaming and a PC would give me probably double+ the performance for the same price, but I am changing places quite often between work, family and school, so a notebook is the most practical solution. Also I am not into FPS shooters or other very power draining games anyway, it is mostly WoT and some old school strategy games. Everything on top of that performance-wise is nice, but not mandatory.
My budget not set at a certain mark, if something is making the final product better by a huge margin, I can pay 200 Euros more. Not meaning I would pay 2k euros ofc.

I am not really into hardware stuff, so pls try to keep your advices and tips simple stupid. Thx.

How big should the screen be?
And what is your budget?(I know, you said there is no budget per sé, but it would help to find something appropriate)

My current screen is 17,3" wide, would rather not downgrade from that.
I would set my budget at around 800-900€ with the freedom of spending more if I want to like I described above.

I wholeheartedly recommend Apple's macbooks. Great performance and design. Good enough for gaming as well.

With a price tag... If you have the money, then yes I agree with you, but there are better builds if you're seeking better performance/$ than what apple provides.

I appreciate your help xen, but fuck off with that apple shite. I am not willing to invest hundreds of bucks just to make the rest of the gear compatible with my notebook.

Well, not many Gaming Notebooks out there with good durability. Also I thought he would be able to reuse the registration of his old Notebook, or am I wrong? I know I reused the Windows of an old notebook once.

Highly unlikely. Seeing that your windows license is usually bound to one set of hardware.

Had an MSI Gaming Laptop when I was a soldier. Solid stuff they build.
Even if you have to get a new OS, you will pay ~35€ if you buy it on Amazon, which is way cheaper.

Thanks mokka, looked a bit into it looks solid from my very narrow PoV.

As I told you above I am not really going fully into the gaming direction with the games I am playing not being that performance consuming. So could someone find a more versatile setup, maybe with a SSD for example. Just for me being able to compare. I don't think that I need a enlightened keyboard for example Kappa

You usually have the windows key on the bottom of a notebook if you purchased it with windows. You can reuse that key for any other computer. Obviously, you can only use that key on one computer at a time. Older activations will automatically deactivate. Even if the key is not on the bottom of your notebook, just extract the key from the registry and use it on the new notebook.

well upgrading the laptop ssd wise takes about 10mins but there should be also a version with a ssd which for sure is much more expensive than buying a ssd on your own (samsung evo masterrace btw)

MAC laptops are without doubt not that bad as you think it is, but it's too expensive imo and if you want a laptop just to play games then don't go for Apple, ever. Macbooks are more about efficiency & quality, if you want a tiny mix of that but better performance then go for Asus. Funny fact: Did you know that Macbooks run Windows better at almost anything than normal laptops?
Acer & Dell also have some nice budget laptops on the market if you're interested.

In my opinion MSI is terrible. It's big, heavy, gets broken easily, has overpriced components, overhyped & shit in general, in fact I could say the same thing about Lenovo. I've had MSI for many years and that's my experience with it.
You also mentioned that you will most likely only play WoT. Since I no longer follow its scene I wouldn't know, but if the game is still really bad optimized and still has no multi-core support then I would recommend you getting a good i7-processor with a powerful single-core.
If you ever get a Macbook and want to play games with better quality & higher performance just make sure you bootcamp it. Running the client with a dedicated GPU is also a very important factor when it comes to laptops.
