Stronk Photos

Postby Dr_Slartibartfart » 18 Mar 2021 18:41

So as I have been doing quite a lot of things with photography I thought it would be fun to create a little thread where people can share the pictures they have taken.

Here are the pics I have taken today with my new camera :)

EDIT: Photos should be visible now. Thought direct linking from google photos would work since in incognito it still worked. Turns out that was a lie.

Did another trip out into the dunes today, this time I did some raw shooting so I had a way more freedom with editing. Also the sun was shining like really nice.

Re: Stronk Photos

Postby Dr_Slartibartfart » 19 Mar 2021 18:06

Thanks :)

I am using a Fujifilm xt-2 with an XF 18-135mm lens. Not the cheapest stuff but it is so worth it :O

In these photo's I am shooting raw, which is just an uncompressed file containing all the information the camera gathered. You can then use that info later with editing to bring back details from shadows and highlights better. For the editing I use lightroom combined with photoshop when I want to do focus stacking. Will explain what that is with some examples below. But shooting in raw also means you really wanna do some color editing to make the photo look nicer since it often looks bland straight out of camera. Like the this shot you can see that it is fairly subtle but changes the feeling of the picture completely. I often just use a LUT or Preset to get a good base to work from and then just do little changes. I dont want to do anything really drastic as that just is no fun for me. Good example of it:
Image
And here is a good example which shows how much info you can get back. As I really under exposed the shot as the exposure was set for the sky which was way brighter than the trees in the shadows of course.

Image

Spoiler:
About that focus stacking: its a thing where you set up your camera focus on the closest point of your subject and then the camera will take pictures, focusing a bit further away with each shot. These you can then load into photoshop, click a few buttons and it will then stack all the focused parts on top of each other, giving you way more that is in focus.
For example:
First photo is:

And after 20 shots the focus ends here:

When automagically touched by photoshop you end up with this:

It is truly amazing as I was you know, hand holding the camera while crouching, so the camera was everything but steady. Photoshop can just align them and blend them so beautifully it truly is amazing.

Well it is a combination of both. For example composition and lighting is something that I really wanted to understand. So I often just sit around in my room photographing different things under different lighting to see what comes out. For composition I often just watch video vlogs and look at what they do for composition and whether the result is something I like too. This vid is a good example of that:

phpBB [video]

But you can't really get a good understanding of it unless you practice it a lot. Going out and just shooting pictures even when the conditions aren't perfect is worth it as you will have to work way harder to get something good.

With editing the photo's I have watched probably somewhere around 20 hours of youtube videos about them. Just to understand what everything does, what options there are and what to do/not do. The videos I watch about them are often just things I come across and want to understand better. So I started with the most generic out of generic videos, heard/saw a few things and looked more into that, and with that video I saw some more things I wanted to know more about, etc. etc. For example the focus stacking is something my dad heard of and asked whether I could do that too with this camera. So I went and looked for it and figured the whole thing out with a few videos.

I really have dived down deep into this and I love that I can just keep diving deeper and deeper and still have more than enough things to explore. Right now I have been doing a bit of landscape/scenery, product and nature photography. But there is so much more to discover there and also there are other genres like street photography which I havent even touched yet.

I loved that one too the picture with the most vibe I have taken yet :)

Although I think I have taken my new favorite photo today when I went to do some cycling in the dunes and the beach

Image

Put this as my desktop background and I really love the vibe with this one. The deserted beach restaurant, the man walking and the sea gull in the air. You do need to view it big to really feel it good though.

BTW, if you ever want a picture in non-imgurcompression quality just ask me and i'll gib it :)

Any local FB groups? I'd post that there and ask if someone recognizes them. It's really a nice picture
