Thats common sense and everybody knows this. But since there is this type of safe in many movies, I wondered how they worked

This type of lock is not uncommon at all even today, and it is still perfectly save (my grandmother has one). What they show in heist movies (listening with a stethoscope or even electric amplification) doesn't work. A quality safe takes ages to open. When someone dies and didn't give the code to the heirs that's fun. The manufacturers have technicians for that, but even they need 10 hours+ to get in.
