medium class notebook

Postby wetlioN » 09 Oct 2016 15:59

sup mr sexiіs,

i wanna buy a notebook. primary use would be multimedia thingies with the occasional gaming and mobile workstation like writing something in the train.
im looking for something slim, kinda powerfull but no dedicated gaming notebook. it just needs to have a ssd, good i5 or i7 and a not too shabby grfx card, even tho gaming is only occasional and i dont want to run the newest stuff in 4k on it. 15" should be good.

any recommendations? i dont have a lot of experience with notebook manufacturers. as im scrolling through the interwebs something like the acer aspire nitro kinda looks promising.

These are pretty nice, they have IPS panels so the colours are close to real life:
HP Pavilion 15-au030nd
Medion Erazer P6661 30020566

This one is good as well but has a TN panel, so the colours are not as good:
Acer Aspire F5-573G-56MC

im asking myself atm if its worth ruling out gaming completely cause the stuff you get for decent prices is totally ridculous.

maybe i should look for something focussing on multimedia completely

the thing is, when you go for i5/i7 the price jumps to like 500 already. since those cpus alone are like €300.

HP 15-ay026nd

that thing is like the cheapest you will get really, but then you get a 720p tn screen.

I'm using this right now, except with a 950M, instead of the 940M and I'm very satisfied with everything from working to gaming.
Though, if 500€ is too high, then this is by far over the limit.

For now I'm using a Lenovo W541. I bought it due to its i7-4910 processor I mainly used for statistical model calculations and simulations. The graphics card isn't too bad, but it doesn't really stand out at all, so for gaming it's working but nothing really top notch or outstanding. It also has a 500GB SSD. The touchpad is atrocious though, so a mouse is certainly recommended. Battery lasts surprisingly long and I was quite surprised by that...

I also have another Lenovo for working outside and I have that thing since 2012 and I think it runs like on day 1.

I think it's also a matter of taste after all....

For multimedia purpose I can recommend the yoga 900 (i7+16gb ram edition). Bought that some months ago and I'm very pleased with the performance and the 4-in-1 convertible approach. But dunno whether it's within your budget. "Medium class" is relative. ;-) Due to the 16gb ram which is used for graphics too, it should be able to manage some games as well. But I tested only Heartsthone.. ofc that's easy. But I think either serious gaming or mobile work/multimedia, there is no "get it all" notebook.

I'd say you should go for 2 devices: one ultrabookish-Laptop (long battery life, enough performance, light in weight) for working purposes (and carrying it around) and a mATX/ITX PC for gaming at home.
You can't really combine high performance (for gaming) and being agile, because high performance laptops are usually really heavy, loud, big, the battery sucks and the prices are ridiculous.

I agree, its not really worth it trying to combine gayming and multimedia/work on travel, especially when you cant throw money out the window. For the money it takes to get a notebook that can do all that shit you can buy both one just as/more powerful PC and one nb for taking with to places that can get some work done.

Have you thought about buying a refurbished / used laptop?

http://www.notebooksbilliger.de/noteboo ... +notebooks

- they are cheap, starting at ~170€
- you can buy a new battery as backup

I've bought a refurbished IBM Thinkpad T42 from them - that was like 8 years ago. They even sent me a new battery (the first ones lifetime was shorter than promised) and a new power supply (that went RIP) without any issues.

These looks like pretty good purchases, and forget about the i7 as i5s are more than enough for everything, even gaming.

Gaming notebooks might be bulky to carry around but you also get bigger arms.

And they will get even bigger if you think about all the extra batteries he has to carry around. :SOA:

ye im always up for used/refurbished stuff, havent found anything there tho.

dont get me wrong with the gaming intention. the idea was to maybe have it for a quick round of cs/something similar or if i ever get together with some buddies on a lan for some old games
i will always have a desktop pc for that shit.

remmel has a point :xenisafag:

dunno about convertibles. of course the idea sounds nice, but do you really make use of the options you have there? it always seemed a bit pricey for what you get. dunno if i should just get an ipad/tablet with a notebook together for that.

what orrie posted sounds the most pleasing to me atm, even tho dfx is right with what he says.

other question: if gaming was ruled out, what kind of slim notebook would you suggest, that can also handle full hd streaming and be the source of a projector/tv?

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/build-your-own-laptop/

This might be something, you can choose what you want andmaybe save a lot of money on a shitty graphics card or something. Also the pound to euro exchange is really favorable for us now.

for werk and media: http://geizhals.de/lenovo-ideapad-510-1 ... uk&hloc=eu

(you can replace the dvd for another hdd/ssd slot if needed easily)

tho your acer deal is at least on par with that since 256gb ssds aint that expensive these days
